One hopes this won't make it, and I would be suprised if it does, as the BBC is treasured by a lot of people. Both Tories and non-Tories! To do this would seem a bit suicidal to me!

Right time to retire??

Nonsense! He should have announced it before Christmas - his delay is a slap in the face to the Tory association in Stratford!

Martin, As an oldie, I am mightily glad that William Gladstone and Winston Churchill "Stayed too long in Parliament" which is not a fencing match although present incumbents are doing their best to reduce it to one. The "Democratic deficit" and the centralisation of power in government, industry and finance is the root of our ills and that is what Libdems should be fighting about, not expenses fiddled (at about 0.00001%) the significance of banking fiddles and out of sight compared with taking this nation to war, based on truth fiddling, with its consequent excacerbation of world instability and terrorism. For heavens sake fight on issues that really matter, like giving MP's and Councillors some real power to represent the needs and views of their constituents - without this it's all hot air. Best of luck in thr campaign. Gordon

I'd hand him a knighthood. For decades smokers have been literally getting away with murder (because death through inhaling other people's smoke is a reality, as any doctor will confirm). The only possible defence might be in cases where it's a genuine addiction and this would only serve to further damn the outwardly respectable drug dealers (one of whom is a prominent UK politician), who gain enormous wealth through dealing in death.
Tobacco must be criminalised as soon as possible.
